Drawing inspiration from Studio 54, Jiri Kalfar’s collection was the ultimate resemblance of 70’s decadence. Building from an era of glamour and luxury, his collection expresses his interpretation of 70’s silhouettes and the movement to modern day fashion. Drawing inspiration from the likes of David Bowie, Jiri’s SS19 collection combines the softness of floral prints against striking sequin embellishments.
Pushing boundaries in his SS19 collection, the designer’s line of men’s wear brings an edge to the industry with its gender fluidity, defying expectations and expanding men’s fashion. Broadening the limitations of typical men’s fashion in today’s society in particular was an electric blue and gold sequined ensemble, featured on the catwalk. The ensemble was made up of an intricate design of carefully layered sequins, built up on top of a sheer mesh.
Breaking the boundaries of traditional evening wear, Jiri Kalfar used simplistic techniques to produce a collection challenging Elie Sabb with his bold choice of layering, fringe and perfectly positioned detailing. One of his most dramatic looks included an assortment of pinks in the form of an elegant evening dress. The top half, incorporating a dusty rose shade base, built upon by layers of blush colored sequins positioned in an intricate pattern.
The dress was highlighted by thick straps tied in bows at the shoulder, and the piece was pulled together by a plum colored satin band around the waist that fell into a knee length, vibrant, red fringe skirt. The skirt was finalized by a zigzag pattern created by innovative cuts of fringe across the bottom.
Along with creating a unique collection, designer Jiri Kalfar aims to take a sustainable approach to designing, with the brand focusing on zero waste, recycling sequins from unwanted clothes to use in his SS19 collection.
